What if you could choose what your child was like? What if you could choose their height, intelligence, and skin color? This may seem unusual but scientists around the world are finding new ways to edit genes and DNA. This could be a ground-breaking development in the scientific world. Diseases like Huntington´s and cancer could be eliminated from the human genome. But is it ethical? There are concerns that gene-editing could become full-blown eugenics, or that genetically modified children would have an advantage over ¨natural children¨.
Much like IVF, gene modification in embryos would be very expensive, and probably only available to the rich, and deepening inequality between the rich and poor. Eugenics and racial discrimination could also occur.
